Pope Leo XIV Is Coming to Spain – Free Things to Do in Madrid
If you live in Spain or are planning to visit in early June, there is one event that is going to be impossible to miss. Pope Leo XIV is making his apostolic journey to Spain from June 6 to 12, 2026, and Madrid is the first stop on a trip that will also take him to Barcelona and the Canary Islands. For Indians and Keralites living here, this is one of those rare moments where the city you now call home becomes the centre of the world’s attention.
Why This Visit Is Historic
Madrid has not received the head of the Catholic Church in 15 years. This trip marks the first time in Spanish history that a sitting Pope will address the members of both the Congress and the Senate. With events expected to draw over a million people across the city, the scale of the visit is genuinely extraordinary. Pope Leo XIV accepted the personal invitation of King Felipe VI and the Church in Spain, and the itinerary reflects both the spiritual and social dimensions of his mission – from homeless shelters to youth vigils to a national address in Parliament.
Full Schedule: Pope Leo XIV in Madrid (June 6–9)
Friday, June 6 – Arrival Day
The Pope touches down at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas International Airport in the morning. He will be received by the King and Queen and other senior authorities, before travelling to the Royal Palace for an official welcome ceremony.
That same afternoon, Leo XIV will visit CEDIA 24 Horas, a Caritas-run social project providing comprehensive care for homeless people. It is a deliberately grounded way to open the trip – charity before ceremony. The visit concludes with a live performance by Niña Pastori.
The evening belongs to the youth.
A Prayer Vigil with young people will be held at Plaza de Lima, right next to the Bernabéu Stadium. Before the vigil, the Pope will travel along Paseo de la Castellana from Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz to Plaza de Lima in the Popemobile – so if you want to catch a glimpse, this is your moment. The vigil will include music from groups like Hakuna, Siloé, and Besmaya, and will conclude with Eucharistic Adoration.
Practical Note: Events on June 6 and 7 are open to unregistered attendees, but registered participants will have priority access closer to the stage. Registration is open at archimadrid.org.
Saturday Night, June 6, Sunday, June 7 – The White and Yellow Night
This deserves its own section because it is genuinely one of the most exciting parts of the visit for residents. On the night of Saturday, June 6 to Sunday, June 7, Madrid will hold a special “White and Yellow Night” – named after the colours of the Vatican flag.
15 museums and cultural institutions across the city will open their doors with extended hours and free admission. This is Madrid doing what Madrid does best: turning a big event into a cultural celebration open to everyone.

Madrid is making it easier to get around during the visit. From June 3 to June 9, 2026, the following services will be free:

- BiciMAD (public bicycle service)
If you are planning to attend any of the events, use public transport. Getting around by metro and bus is going to be far more practical than driving anywhere near the event zones.

The Reina Sofía School of Music will also host a free concert at its auditorium from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM (prior registration required). This is a perfect night out whether you’re accompanying a pilgrim visiting the city or just want to experience Madrid in a different light.
Sunday, June 7 – Corpus Christi Mass at Plaza de Cibeles
Sunday is the main event. It is the Feast of Corpus Christi, and Pope Leo XIV will preside over Holy Mass at Plaza de Cibeles – one of the most iconic public squares in Europe – followed by a Eucharistic procession in the surrounding area.
For those unfamiliar, Cibeles is where Real Madrid fans celebrate their league titles. On June 7, it will be transformed into an open-air cathedral. Crowds of over a million people are anticipated.
That afternoon, the Pope will preside over a gathering called “Tejer Redes” (Weaving Networks) at the Movistar Arena, bringing together representatives from culture, art, and economics.

Monday, June 8 – Parliament, Cathedral, and Bernabéu
Monday is perhaps the most historic day of the Madrid leg. The morning begins with the Pope meeting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at the Apostolic Nunciature. He will then travel to the Congress of Deputies to address both houses of Parliament – the first time in Spanish history that a Pope has done so.
Following this, Leo XIV will meet with Spanish bishops at the Episcopal Conference, before leading a prayer to Our Lady of Almudena at the stunning Cathedral of Santa María de la Almudena.
The evening takes an unexpected turn: the Pope will preside over a Diocesan Community gathering at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The event will feature a Madrid Family Choir of 1,000 singers (including 300 children), 70 musicians, and 100 dancers. Guest artists include David Bustamante, Daniel Diges, and Diana Navarro, alongside Catholic music figures like Luis Alfredo, Chito Morales, and Maite López. The Cruz Diez Symphony Orchestra, the Salesian Pop Band, and choreographer Ismael Olivas are also part of the programme.
Tuesday, June 9 – Departure
The final morning in Madrid is reserved for a meeting with volunteers at IFEMA, before the Pope departs to Barcelona.
