Melons, poetry, young artists and village legends – a month of good things that ask for nothing but your time. September in Madrid has a particular feeling to it.
The heat softens, the city refills after August, and the cultural calendar wakes up all at once. What surprises many visitors – and plenty of residents – is how much of it is free. Regional libraries, public galleries and the Comunidad de Madrid’s own programme quietly put on some of the best events of the year, and nobody is asked for a ticket at the door.
Here is what’s worth putting in your diary this month.
Melon Market at Casa de Campo
Día de Mercado de la Cámara Agraria
Start the month the way farmers do: early, and with fruit. On the first Saturday of September, growers from across the Madrid region set up at the Casa de Campo fairground for the Cámara Agraria’s monthly market day, selling directly to the public.
September’s star is the melon – in particular the Mochuelo from Villaconejos, a late-season variety with pale white flesh that locals will tell you is the only one worth eating. Alongside it you’ll find heritage tomatoes from the orchards of Bustarviejo, still grown from seed lines that predate the supermarket era.
It is a shopping trip, but it’s also a good excuse to talk to the people who grow the food.

Circuitos 2026: Ten young artists, one free gallery

Every year the Sala de Arte Joven hands its walls to ten artists under 35 working in the Madrid region – and every year it’s one of the most honest shows in the city.
The 2026 edition is titled Bitácoras. El valor de lo invisible (“Logbooks. The value of the invisible”), and it looks at the creative process itself: the notes, detours and false starts that never make it into a finished piece. Expect sculpture, painting and installation circling around nature, memory and technology.
The gallery sits right on top of a major metro interchange, so it’s an easy hour if you’re passing through.

Dasein: poems set to music in Retiro
Dasein
Friday 25 September is a good night to be in a Madrid library – and you’ll have to choose between two of them.
In Retiro, the Biblioteca Elena Fortún hosts Dasein, a musical poetry show built around eleven poems by Félix Jiménez. Actor Ramiro del Pozo recites while pianist Ramón Siles accompanies him, and the two forms fold into each other rather than taking turns. It’s an hour, and it’s quiet in the best way. Free entry until the auditorium fills upntil the auditorium fills!

Retales: a dramatised reading in Usera
Retales – Lectura dramatizada
Across the city, the Biblioteca José Hierro presents Retales, a theatrical recital of classic Spanish and Latin American poetry. Actor Raúl Tirado works through the names you’d hope for – Lorca, Machado, Cervantes, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz – using masks and physical theatre to give old verses a body rather than simply reading them aloud.
It’s an intimate performance in a small room, which is exactly why it works. Seats go on a first-come basis, so arrive early. Free, until full!

The month ends on a useful note. The Biblioteca Antonio Mingote in Latina hosts the latest session of Miércoles de Salud, a monthly health series run by three local health centres. September’s subject is digital wellbeing – practical strategies for a healthier relationship with screens, led by health professionals. Free, first come first served!

Most of these events run in Spanish, and none of them require booking – but the popular ones fill their rooms well before the start time. Turn up fifteen minutes early, bring a bag for the melons, and you will have a full month of Madrid for the price of a metro ticket.
