Mercado Cervantino 2026: Golden Age Market in Alcalá de Henares
The Mercado Cervantino is one of the biggest period markets in Spain and the heart of the Semana Cervantina, the week Alcalá de Henares celebrates its most famous son, Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote. The festival is built around 9 October, the anniversary of his baptism in 1547 at the church of Santa María la Mayor in Alcalá.The Semana Cervantina is a declared Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional, a national tourist festival status in Spain.

For 2026, the market brings around 400 stalls, more than 40 performing companies and over 300 activities across roughly two kilometres of the old town. Expect craft stalls, spices, cheese, wine and leather goods, plus street theatre, falconry, jousting shows and a Celtic music festival at the Huerta del Obispo.
- Dates: Thursday 8 to Monday 12 October 2026. Monday 12 October is a national holiday in Spain, so the long weekend gets very busy.
- Price: Free entry. Budget for food and shopping.
- Location: Plaza de Cervantes, Calle Mayor, Plaza de San Diego, Plaza de Palacio and the Huerta del Obispo in the historic centre.
- How to get there: Take the Cercanías C-2 or C-7 to Alcalá de Henares from Madrid. The old town is a short walk from the station.

Tips: Go on Thursday or Friday morning if you can, because the weekend crowds are huge. Stalls take a midday break around 14:30, so plan lunch in an old-town restaurant around then. Do not drive in; parking near the centre is a headache during the market, and the train is cheap and easy.

Perrotón Madrid 2026: Charity Dog Race at Hipódromo de la Zarzuela
Perrotón is a charity run and walk that you do with your dog. It campaigns for adoption and responsible pet ownership, and against abandonment and animal abuse. Organised by Abott Producciones and directed by Alejandra Botto, 2026 marks its 15th anniversary. Across its previous 14 editions, more than 54,500 dogs have taken part, and it calls itself the biggest dog-lover event in Spain and Europe.
This year the race moves to the Hipódromo de la Zarzuela, with a 4.5 km course inside the central ring of the racetrack. Around the race there is the Perrotón Village, a DJ set by Sofía Cristo, an awards gala and live music. After the run, the first Madrid Dog Fest takes over, with a National Police dog unit demonstration, food for humans and dogs, agility shows, a “Dogga” masterclass and a casting call for dog actors.
- Date and time: Saturday 17 October 2026, race start at 12:00.
- Standard registration: €20 (approx. ₹2,100) for one person with one dog. Every person needs their own registration, and each runner can bring only one dog.
- VIP registration: €50 (approx. ₹5,200), adding VIP area access, VIP parking, a limited-edition USB and a designer T-shirt. Places are limited.
- Donation without running: €10 (approx. ₹1,050).
- Minors: Under-14s must run with a registered adult. Under-18s need signed parental authorisation and a copy of the parent’s ID.
30% of race fees go to the non-profit Asociación Perrotón, which funds sterilisation campaigns for low-resource shelters and leishmaniasis prevention.
Booking tips: Registration closes on 9 October 2026, so do not wait. Bib and welcome pack collection is on 10 and 11 October; check the official site for the pickup point. The racetrack is off the A-6, northwest of the city centre, and public transport is limited, so confirm parking or shuttle details before the day.

Fiesta de la Trashumancia 2026: When Do the Sheep Walk Through Madrid?
Once a year, around a thousand sheep and goats, with their shepherds and sheepdogs, walk straight through the centre of Madrid. The Fiesta de la Trashumancia follows an ancient livestock route and celebrates transhumance and extensive grazing as tools for biodiversity and against climate change. It is one of the most surreal and photogenic sights in the city.
The festival began in 1994 to push Parliament to pass the Ley de Vías Pecuarias, the law that protects old drove roads as public land. At Plaza de Cibeles, the shepherds symbolically pay 50 maravedís (old coins) to city officials for the right to pass, recreating a centuries-old agreement. It is organised by the Asociación Trashumancia y Naturaleza with support from the Concejo de la Mesta, Fundación MAVA, Madrid City Council and WWF Spain.
- Date and time: Sunday 25 October 2026, in the morning around 9 AM (time will be announced soon by the authorities.). Related talks and workshops run from 16 October, but the parade is on Sunday.
- Price: Free. No registration needed to watch.
- Route: Casa de Campo (Puente del Rey), Paseo Virgen del Puerto, Parque de Atenas, Cuesta de la Vega, Almudena Cathedral, Calle Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Calle de Alcalá and Plaza de Cibeles.
- How to get there: Metro to Sol or Ópera for the middle of the route, or Banco de España for the finish at Cibeles.

Tips: The start at Casa de Campo is usually the calmest place to watch. Sol and Cibeles fill up fast, so arrive early if you want the classic photo of sheep in front of the Cibeles fountain. The organisers say the time and route still need final approval, so check again in the week before.
